The Wrong Number

Episode 3 “Tunde I’m two weeks late, I’m scared” I informed him. “Pamilerin you can't be pregnant, we always use protection except for few times that we got carried away” “Those few times are enough to get me pregnant” “I think you should get tested first before jumping into conclusion” he said “I will get a pregnancy test strip from the pharmacy on my way back from school” I said as I dress up preparing for lectures. Later in the day, we both came back from school, and I prepared dinner and dished it into a breakable plate. We do eat together. “Babe you are not eating, you are just staring at the food” he said looking directly into my eyes. “How will I eat, I’ve bought the pregnancy test strip and I don’t know what the result will say. I’m seriously scared” “Just calm down, let’s see the result first” “Tunde what if I’m pregnant?” “When will you have the test?” he asked “First thing tomorrow morning” “Just calm down” “You are just saying I should calm do

DNA surgery on embryos removes disease

Image
Precise "chemical surgery" has been performed on human embryos to remove disease in a world first, Chinese researchers have told the BBC. The team at Sun Yat-sen University used a technique called base editing to correct a single error out of the three billion "letters" of our genetic code They altered lab-made embryos to remove the disease beta-thalassemia. The embryos were not implanted. The team says the approach may one day treat a range of inherited diseases. Base editing alters the fundamental building blocks of DNA: the four bases adenine, cytosine, guanine and thymine. They are commonly known by their respective letters, A, C, G and T. All the instructions for building and running the human body are encoded in combinations of those four bases. The potentially life-threatening blood disorderbeta-thalassemia is caused by a change to a single base in the genetic code - known as a point mutation. The team in China edited it back. They scanned

3 REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD NOT DITCH MEDICINE FOR ANYTHING ELSE

Image
Medicine and surgery is one of the most sought after courses in Nigeria. People could give anything and everything to get admitted into a university to study it; a decision they soon realize was hastily made and soon fall out of love with the course. So, are you frustrated in MED school, are you now drawn to doing something else, are you losing hope because you're failing out already? Then, you should read this article on reasons why you should not ditch medicine upon graduating. 1• YOU ARE GUARANTEED A STABLE INCOME. With the current economic recession that has led to an outstanding level of unemployment in Nigeria and a hike in the prices of goods and services, working as a medical doctor would go a long way in ensuring a stable inflow of income. Ditching medicine now for another course that may not stand the test of time would not be the wisest decision as they say "a bird at hand is Worth two in the bush" (sic). It would be better t Le fin. with what you have

5 Proven Methods For Gaining Self Discipline

Image
There are many important qualities that can contribute to a person’s achievements and happiness, but there is only one that begets sustainable, long-term success in all aspects of life: self discipline. Whether in terms of your diet, fitness, work ethic or relationships, self discipline is the number one trait needed to accomplish goals, lead a healthy lifestyle, and ultimately, be happy. According to a 2013 study by Wilhelm Hoffman, people with high self control are happier than those without. The study discovered this is true because the self disciplined subjects were more capable of dealing with goal conflicts. These people spent less time debating whether to indulge in behaviors detrimental to their health, and were able to make positive decisions more easily. The self disciplined did not allow their choices to be dictated by impulses or feelings. Instead, they made informed, rational decisions on a daily basis without feeling overly stressed or upset. De

My baby wan die oo! My baby oo!" She burst into tears for what seemed like a tenth time as she rushed in with her baby cradled in her arms. The woman identified as Mrs Mercy Omoruyi, couldn't control herself. Tears ran down her face non-stop and her body was drenched in sweat. "Doctor, abeg! Save my baby oo!" The paediatric senior registrar on duty in the unit, Dr Eseosa Osadiaye, swung into action. It was what they lived for down here. In the woman's arms was a 3-year-old girl, Esohe Omoruyi, who was said to be the woman's only surviving child, after she had lost the previous three shortly after birth. The little girl was so pale she was almost white; her eyes had turned inwards and her body felt cold to the touch. Her pulse oximetry, w

- Episode 2 Weeks later, Tunde and I started dating. Trust people, they noticed in no time. We were tagged as a couple. Some girls in our class who had their eyes on him gave me attitude but I understood. I knew that they secretly envied me because I was dating the most intelligent guy not only in the department, but the entire faculty. I knew how they flocked around him all in the name of tutorials but he never gave them attention. With time, they realized that we were for real and gave up. Even the guys discovered that they could only get him to tutor them through me, so they had no choice than to be in my good books. With time, the girls started relating well with me and everything was back to normal again. Tunde and I became so close and inseparable, we spent most of our free time together. Some months later, he came to my room in the evening to check on me. We chatted for a while and all of a sudden, he started this stupid rough play. He kissed me, then caressed me. I wanted t

*(As a man thinketh in his heart so is he. prov: 237)* I didn't realise how deep it had eaten Refused to see how it was affecting me and those around me Perfectionism, depression and insecurity A fatal combination. The depression had reached deep into my soul It had rearranged my rib cage Made my heart its home That I soon lacked the ability to radiate happiness Perfectionism restricted me from letting go Making me aware of only faults My countenance began to change For all I saw in myself was how I didn't measure up to society "Not pretty enough " "too fat" "Not smart enough" "too boring " I soon understood why people found me difficult to associate with. " a sadist " I had become. Perfectionism took the joy away from joy The fun away from fun And made them all a burden. I searched my mind for a time when I had real fun, joy, and laughter And yes I found one But also realized that in thos

Teenage Blues

Greg has this expression on his face, the cat that ate the canary expression. He beckoned me to a corner and asked me to come see something. I wondered what he was up to but I knew I would find out if I walked to him. " Leki look at what I found online " He was smiling from ear to ear urging me to look at his phone . First and foremost, we were in our third year in secondary school and our school law was very strict about the use of cell phones in school, if a senior even caught us with phone we may never see it again. But then again Greg was a sly fox, he could sell ice to an Eskimo. I looked at what Greg was so excited about and I wish I didn't look , Immediately I took my eyes away from the phone screen and squeezed them shut. Greg was laughing at me " What eee haven't you seen BF before, jew man " " Where did you get this" I said trying my best not to look at the videos. " Jew man, Internet now, it's so easy to find , Look ee

LECTURE FREE DAY

Image
You woke up and checked the time on your phone. Ah!!!It was 7:49am. You switched on your mobile data and checked the group chat for a class update. You scroll down the arguments and devotionals, searching for information as to the class venue and time. You could not believe it. You wiped your eyes to make sure you were not dreaming. The 8:00am, 10:00am, 1:00pm and 2:00pm classes had been cancelled. You typed a quick love emoji to your class rep and switched off your phone. Luckily it was a Tuesday so you had no other activities for the day. You did a small happy dance and begged your roommate to transfer some movies to your laptop. It was going to be a great day, you said to yourself. You put off bathing till whenever you were going to be done with the movie marathon. Clad in a T-shirt and shorts, you went to shop 20 with a cup in hand to get Coke and biscuits to complete your cinema session. You bought them and while sashaying back to your room, you heard your name. It was Ken. You

What to Do When Your Passion Isn’t Enough

Image
When building something, anything, most people will tell you, “Never let that passion die!” “Always remember why you started!” “Always make sure that your love for what you do is burning bright!” People will remind you repeatedly to keep pushing forward and to stay as dedicated as you were on day one. Of course, when you’re on the first few days of your project, you’re wildly motivated, as if nothing could go wrong. You know you’re strong enough and you believe that you can do it. And you probably can. But sometimes the reality is that you realize no matter how passionate you are, it doesn’t seem to be enough. When this realization hits you, what do you do? 1. Be honest with yourself. Instead of running out the door and going on a hunt for more passion, stop, sit and talk to yourself about what’s going on. How willing are you to figure out how to make things work when they’re not? If you doubt your ability, no level of passion will help you succeed. When things get shaky, do

MEDICAL SCHOOL

Image
A Place Filled with books, gigantic, An Academia filled with brains, fantastic. A Place where stress is a norm, Just to prepare for the storm. A place filled with echoes of success, An area where few lament after a distress. Where you have an exam, then the re-sit, Just to prevent an exit. A league likened to that of champions, As every one is a champion in their mansion. An exciting and ecstatic atmosphere, Though it gets tense when exams are near. An arena where you battle through 5 MB’s, Though many single out one as the MB. Others Path/Pharm as the most tasked, None the less all must be passed. A school where you come in contact with many, All with directions, many not your way. An adventure you don’t want to miss, An experience you don’t want to be told about. Many are called, few are chosen. You are among the few. A.D.A (c) September, 2013

The Mystery of Sleep

Image
I too did not know that sleep positions can contribute to heartburn, back pain, snoring, facial wrinkles etc BACK SLEEPERS Pros: Sleeping on your back is great for the spine and neck because the back is straight and not forced into any contortions. In an ideal world, you'd sleep on your back without any pillows, as this position leaves the neck in a neutral position. Back sleeping also has its cosmetic benefits. Spending all night with your face in the air, as opposed to smooshed into a pillow, leads to fewer facial wrinkles. Cons: For those who snore or suffer from sleep apnea, sleeping on your back will enhance this. Lying on your back causes the back of the tongue to collapse into the airway, which obstructs breathing and creates those beautiful snoring sounds. Doctors suggest side sleeping for people with sleep apnea. SIDE SLEEPERS Pros: Sleeping on the side is the most common sleep position for a reason. If you are a side sleeper, you should definitely sleep on the

Episode 1 My name is Isaac Oluwapamilerin Daniella. Everybody calls me Pamilerin except my Dad, who only calls me Daniella. I am the first daughter of a family of three kids; two girls and a boy. My parents are civil servants. I am intelligent, emotional, tall, beautiful and a size 8 with ebony dark skin. I can classify myself as a good girl because I was raised well by my parents. I am not an introvert and I am not an extrovert either. Let me just say I am in between. Tunde and I are level mates, same department. We have been very good friends since 100 level. He is the best student in class with the highest CGPA followed by me, making us the best two students in class. By the time we got to 200 Level, I realized that he had feelings for me. Truth be told, I have feelings for him too. The way we looked at each other in class revealed it, especially during practicals when we were grouped together, but we shied away from it. What attracted me to him was the fact that he was b

Dying Flames

I remember when I still felt a lot better; when I wasn't yet tied down to a spot as I am now. Mummy will pack my hair into two big balls. My brother always said it looked like 'puff-puff'. My big sister had hair like me too and we would wear our puffs together. Now, I am eight years old and I have no more fancy hairstyles; I have no more hair at all. I am now ugly and bald. I used to be normal and attend school like everyone else, accompanied by Ese my big sister and Uyi my not so big brother. But a time came I started falling sick, and I would faint in class now and then. Something must had gone wrong with my belly, because it wouldn't stop swelling. Then my clothes began falling off my body. That was when Peace, one 'Aproko' in my class, said I am carrying a baby in my belly. I was quite confused. I had thought only big women like mommy could carry babies in their bellies. I cannot play with my friends anymore since I'm always weak and tired. I do not
